Broadband Census Taker says:
Service rarely goes down but the speed is no where close to what is promised from approx. 7 AM to 6 PM. Though my employer allows me to work at home, my connection is sufficiently slow that I make the commute more than I would like.

Fantastic service. Every time I've tested my speed it has been almost exactly as advertised.

Carrier seems very slow, esp. for cable, and our neighborhood experiences periodic outages or slow-downs.

I have just switched to Verizon so my experience and hence my comments concern RCN. Have had router reset problems with verizon. Any testing you do will now reflect Verizon's performance.

RCN's customer service is the worst in the nation. says:
For a long time now I have a number of horrible customer service experiences with RCN. By remaining an RCN customer I have given RCN many opportunities to improve their performance and provide at least a minimal quality of service. However, as time goes by things only get worse. Due to the demands of my professional schedule I do not have the time, nor even the desire to detail the multitudes of bad experiences that I have had from RCN. Perhaps the one I get the most laughs about was when I tried to add an email address to one of my RCN accounts and because I did not remember my password, I had to explain the name of every pet I ever had in my life, my mother’s maiden name, and all my favorite foods, and yet was told that none my answers were correct. I was then told that I would receive a letter in the mail within approximately 10 business days. Of course, this never happened, and after waiting the usual 90 minutes on hold was directed to a “customer care” person in the Philippines, who promptly hung up on me, causing an additional 90 minute wait on hold until I was directed to another “customer care” person in the Philippines who explained to me that the USPS closes between mid-December and mid-January for the holidays, which is why I supposedly did not receive my letter. When I explained that I rent a Post Office Box and visit the Post Office in my community every day, I certainly know that what she told me wasn’t true, she actually got angry, called me a liar and said that she knew better than me because she was well trained by RCN! LOL Lots of people have laughed over that story. And quite a few of them have likely also cancelled their service with RCN. While experiences like these with RCN make for funny stories at cocktail parties, they certainly don’t help me in my efforts to make a decent profit within a very difficult world economy. Of all the many companies which I deal with on a daily basis RCN is certainly by far the worst and surely deserves to go bankrupt and never be heard from again. This brings us to the matter at hand. My home phone did not work last month and despite a visit by three RCN “technicians,” it does not work now. In fact RCN never showed up for a service appointment even though I took a day off from work and waited patiently from 8:00am until after 8:00pm. When I called RCN the next day, I was simply told that RCN personnel "forgot" to dispatch the serviceman. No one even apologized. Sadly, RCN did not show up that day either and at 6:00pm I was forced to call RCN and explain that as a doctor I had other responsibilities which were imperative for me to address and so I could not remain at home past 8:00pm for a second day. Even though I talked with an RCN supervisor, he could not assure me that RCN could arrive to service my phone that day. In fact, he told me that he was cancelling my service call since I could not remain at home all evening. Now, I discover that my RCN account has been billed for a "missed appointment"!!! This is completely insane!!! It is absolutely bizarre and a complete injustice. If anybody should be billed for RCN not showing up it should be RCN. You people owe me for lost time with my patients and I will not pay this bill! NO WAY!!! Take me to court of the $49.95! I would really love to have the opportunity to explain to the entire world just how screwed up and dysfunctional RCN really is. My contacts in the communications field remind me that RCN has already gone bankrupt once and now that RCN stock has dropped from $75.00 to less than $4.00 a share, it is clear that God’s justice will prevail and RCN will likely be out of business within the next few months.

it works fine generally; occasionally the modem needs a restart as it seems to have lost it's little mind. We also have a phone line via the cable modem.

I'm not sure who to blame for my often-sluggish internet service - the wireless router in the next room? The high volume of users in the area? Or is the service just not as fast as promised? I know 5mbps isn't the fastest option out there, but I pay almost $60/month for it and usually can't get through a YouTube clip without having to pause for buffering.

we have had this service for 6 months, they keep telling us its our router, we have purchased 3 different routers and the same think with each. sometimes it connects sometimes it doesnt. another friend weve told to purchase this service is having the same issues. We have also replaced rcns modem once and their installers have adjusted signal twice cause theyve had the wrong amount coming into the home. I think rcn has moments when their service just isnt working properly but do not want to admit it and they need to address it. they stated they had a simalar problem like this in another area in the lehigh valley, but not in our area. Something is wrong. And now they are also raising the rates after only 6 months and im supposed to be locked in for a year. so whats that
