The BroadbandCensus.com obtains data about broadband availability, competition, speeds and prices from at least three sources of information:
1. Publicly available information from the Federal Communications Commission about the number of broadband providers in each ZIP code. This data is available from the FCC Web page on "Local Telephone Competition and Broadband Deployment." This information was posted by the FCC in January 2008, and is current as of December 31, 2006.
2. Publicly available information about which providers offer broadband service in each ZIP code. This is available from the Web sites of the carriers AT&T, Brighthouse Communications, Cox Communications, Insight Communications and Time Warner Cable. The data about the ZIP codes in which these companies offer broadband service was obtained from these Web sites in December 2007. If you are a carrier, and would like to participate in the Broadband Census, please contact: drew@broadbandcensus.com.
3. User-generated information about broadband speeds, services and prices, grouped by ZIP codes and ZIP+4 codes. You the consumer are the key source to providing this information. You began providing this data on the "Take the Census" page, starting in January 2008. In the coming months, BroadbandCensus.com plans to deploy and Internet speed test that will integrate actual speed data into BroadbandCensus.com.
